Our incredible classes have something for everyone: off-loom beading, wire-work, bead embroidery, metalwork and unique bead stringing projects. Our instructors teach all over the world, including at the biggest beading events in the country. Our cruise focuses on quality classes with innovative designers!
One full-day class and one 1/2 day workshop are included in the Bead Cruise Registration. Classes are held at the same time, so you may only choose one for each category. Optional kits available, kit prices vary.
Bonus Classes - Some instructors are offering an extra class during the last day at sea. You can purchase an extra class for $55.00. Classes are held at the same time, so one per participant. You must be registered as a Bead Cruise Participant to sign-up for the optional class.
Skill levels:
Intermediate - means you have taken other classes to learn the technique or have completed several projects on your own using the required technique.
Some experience with seed beads helpful - this means you know how to use a needle and thread to do basic beading stitches.
Beginner/All skill levels - Whether this is your first class or you've been making jewelry for years, you'll enjoy these classes.

Class: Miniature Metal books and journals
Technique: metalwork/mixed

Instructor: Mary Hettsmansperger
Description: Using copper sheeting, cold connections, and a variety of materials, students create several books using metalwork, wirework, beading, paper, fiber techniques and patinas. Found, recycled, dime store, industrial, hardware items can be brought to help make the books and jewelry fun and unique. Bring your imagination and fun stuff to create these one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry and journals.
Tool list a must! Students need to bring: pliers (needle nose and regular) wire cutters, hammer, anvil, safety glasses and scissors.

Skill Level: Intermediate Level - Students know how to turn a round loop, make a spiral, and be comfortable working with heavy and light gauge wire.

Description: Engineering and freeform sculpture merge in the creation of an incredible butterfly pendant. Working with an ordered sequence of ideas, guidelines and sizes, students will create one-of-a-kind butterflies inspired by the real thing or the imagination. The light, hand-woven filigree wings move, making it as fun to play with as it is to wear. Beads add dynamic color, and an architecturally-inspired bail attaches the pendant to a chain to finish.

Description: Have you fallen in love with the beauty of filigree? Feed your heart's desire in this workshop full of delightfully ornamental heart pendants! Starting with a basic porcelain heart shaped pendant and an array of raw brass filigree components and basic findings, we will create a bounty of beautiful pieces which interpret the heart motif in very different ways. You will be shown the filigree work, basic metalwork, and wire work techniques for each of these exquisite pendants during the demonstration. Kits will be available for purchase so you may choose to make some or all of the hearts in your choice of several colors. Pendants range from beginner to advanced.

Class: Looped Jewelry
Technique: weaving - fiber & wire

Description: Using linen, copper, and other wires, students will learn the technique of Looping. There will be many options for shape and design. Students will work on several small projects that can be used as necklaces, small sculptures, or other jewelry. Driftwood, rocks, found objects, tumbled glass and recycled items can be used both as molds and as a unique part of these pieces. Students need to bring their own found objects to work with. Mary will have some items to work with, but your own personal found items are encouraged. Students may not finish in the class time, but will have the material and instruction to do so on their own. Students will have the opportunity to start several pieces and use both wire and soft fibers to loop with.

Description: Capture pearls from the sea with bead embroidery and netting. Completing the design are tiny sequin crystals caught in the net. Some experience with seed beads helpful.

round loops and coil wire by hand

Description: Make an arty focal toggle that is meant to be seen, combining function and design. Learn how to craft a triple loop and a beautiful bar to finish a necklace or bracelet. Shaping, wrapping, weaving and tool innovations will be covered.

Description: Serene and regal porcelain faces peek through fine brass filigree in this collection of detailed pendants fit for goddesses and royalty. Learn how to work with raw metal components to create your own unusual shaped bezels and settings that work well with unusually shaped cabochon faces. You will be shown the filigree work, basic metalwork, and wire work techniques for each of these pendants during the demonstration. Description: Learn about the magic of complementary color combinations while creating the Rainforest Cascade Necklace. Choosing two complementary colors for the necklace is encouraged, as we’ll be exploring the dynamism of this harmony. However, students can make the necklace in any colors they choose.

Class: Natural Ornaments Pendant Workshop

Description: This earthy collection of pendants is inspired by dreams of walking through a Victorian garden, filled with filigree scrollwork gates and dripping with flowers and leaves, buzzing dragonflies and fluttering butterflies. In this workshop, you will learn to make basic filigree wraps around cabochon stones, adapting them to different shapes and sizes of stones. You will be shown the filigree work, basic metalwork, and wire work techniques for each of these pendants during the demonstration. The Bead Cruise Instructors
Margie Deeb
Artist, designer, musician, and color expert Margie Deeb is the author of several beading books, including the popular The Beaders Guide to Color and The Beaders Color Palette. She was invited to discuss her approach to color on a 2008 episode of the PBS TV show "Beads, Baubles and Jewels."
Margie teaches color courses for artists, interior designers, and beaders. Her free monthly color column, "Margies Muse," is available on her website. She produces a free graphically enhanced podcast, "Margie Deebs Color Celebration," available on iTunes. Subscription to her free monthly e-newsletter is available on her website. Melanie Brooks
Melanie is a ceramic artist, specializing in the miniature world of beads and jewelry. Working in the comfort of her home studio, she has been making and selling ceramic beads and jewelry of her own design for much of the ten years since she graduated art college. She has sold her work in galleries, bead stores, bead shows, and through the Earthenwood website. Melanie's jewelry designs have appeared in many publications including Beadwork, Stringing and Step by Step Beads.
Barb Switzer
Barb Switzer, former editor of Simply Beads, has been learning, teaching and practicing beadwork for 14 years. Although her specialty is wire, her unlimited passion for the medium has led her to learn many other techniques, including beadweaving, fusing and glass bead making. She has traveled all over the United States to teach classes, attend bead shows and bond with people who share her passion. To reach beaders who cannot attend shows, she has recorded several classes for Beaducation.com, an online learning site. Beverly Herman
Over the past 15 years Beverly has become an expert at a variety of beading techniques which she quickly translated into her own design sensibility. She has been teaching and sharing her bead knowledge for over 13 years. She teaches her original designs at bead retreats and classes throughout the South. Her work has also been published in national bead magazines and books. She has written and published pattern books such as The Russian Dragonfly and A Touch of Russian Elegance. Mary Hettsmansperger
Mary is a fiber/jewelry artist exhibiting/teaching across the US and abroad. Arrowmont, Bead and Button, Convergence, National conferences, guilds and similar venues are some of the places she lends her instruction on jewelry, basketry, surface design and quilting. Marys artwork is represented at SOFAChicago by the Katie Gingrass gallery. She has authored and illustrated 2 books on jewelry, Fabulous Woven jewelry and Wrap, Stitch, fold and Rivet, both published by Lark/Sterling.
